Improving Emissions Control - NEC Directive Implementation
The overall objective of the Twinning project (TR 2008/IB/EN02) is to “improve the environmental conditions in Turkey by implementation and enforcement of the EU environmental acquis in the frame of ambient air quality.” Desired conditions include meeting the EU standards set for ambient air quality towards further protecting human health and the environment. In the Turkish Ministry for Environment and Urbanisation the necessary capacity shall be established to implement the NEC Directive. The aim of this directive is to limit national emissions of sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxide (NOx), volatile organic compounds (NMVOC) and ammonia (NH3) in order to improve the protection of the environment and human health against adverse efffects from acifidifcation, eutrophication and ground-level ozone.
The NEC directive (2001/81/EC) sets emission ceilings for the air pollutants NOx, NMVOC, SO2 and NH3 for the year 2010, which are not to be exceeded in any year after 2010.
